Resort Profile For Val d'Isère

Quality skiing, quality nightlife and great for people watching ... but take your credit card.

You can knock the over-priced accommodation and the expensive food and drink, but you cannot deny the quality of the skiing and the enjoyable nightlife..

Linked with Tignes, the L’Espace Killy ski area compares favourably with any of Europe’s ski areas with than enough terrain to satisfy even the most mile hungry skiers. Intermediate and beginners should both progress well with a good mix of confidence-building runs. There is also plenty for experts and boarders. However, we would strongly recommend a guide if you are venturing off-piste.

The resort itself has an international feel – it is famously popular with British skiers, but is equally popular with the French and Dutch. There is a good mix of accommodation, although expect to pay a premium when compared to the neighbouring Tignes or other French resorts.

Resort Pros

  • Variety and extent of the ski area linked with Tignes.
  • Lifts to plenty of freeride terrain.
  • The high altitude provides quality snow with an unusually attractive alpine town.
  • Mix of accommodation, from luxury chalets to value for money apartments.
  • Great party atmosphere for late season skiing.

Resort Cons

  • Poor quality nursery slopes and some challenging blues make it difficult for beginners.
  • Can appear too British.
  • The expense of most accommodation, restaurants and bars.

Best For

  • Mixed ability intermediate and advanced groups.
  • Those looking for a bit of luxury.
  • Weekend millionaire party goers

Worst For

  • Beginners.
  • Those on a budget.

SlopeSeeker Tips

Avoid the end of day chaos by getting the lift down rather than try and ski back to the resort.
