Resort Profile For Alpe d'Huez

A good value, vast, sunny and learner friendly resort

Alpe d'Huez is one of France's oldest ski resorts, forming part of France's fifth-largest ski area, with 237km of pistes, offering something for everyone. Views from the mountain are breath-taking and its sunny aspect provides an alleged 320 days of sun per year and earning it the nickname “l'île au soleil” – the island in the sun. Great for January and February but the sun can affect late season trips. Considered one of the most beginner friendly resorts in the Alps, with its vast nursery slopes (one of the largest in Europe) plus excellent schools. However, there is a big jump from the nursery areas to most blues and reds. Confident intermediates and advanced skiers will love it, but less confident intermediates may struggle. Plenty to do off-slope with entry to a large outdoor swimming pool and ice rink included in the cost of the lift pass. The dated nature of the resort (the architecture will not inspire you) has kept prices down so we rank Alpe d’Huez highly on value for money. All in all a great resort to learn but a sizeable jump to take on the extensive more challenging terrain.

Resort Pros

  • Value for money
  • High, sunny slopes with long cruising runs
  • Extensive nursery slopes
  • Lively, feel good resort

Resort Cons

  • The overcrowded intermediate pistes during high season
  • Many south facing runs suffer from the sun in late season
  • Some ugly architecture diminishes the alpine charm

Best For

  • Families
  • Great for beginners (including tolerance and terrain)
  • Advanced skiers and boarders
  • Budget accommodation

Worst For

  • Those looking for alpine charm

SlopeSeeker Tips

Head to Signal De L'Homme for quieter runs. Make use of the two-stage gondola from Vaujany as the quickest way to get to the high slopes.
